it was el nino [that's spanish for....the nino, for those don't know].

warmer waters over parts of the pacific ocean, off the coast of SA alter the circulations in the atlantic, thus affecting the parameters it takes to create such a storm.

ps, the al gore comment made me laugh.

I've probably cut your uncle off because he was driving too slow in the left lane before.

I used that video clip for one of my senior presentations on El Nino.

Its a shame the Enso signal didn't show its glory until after all of the forecasts.

It will only be getting worse though!!

Thanks to succuweather (ie accuweather or notsoaccuweather), the National Weather Service wont be the only meteorological agency issuing warnings anymore. Imagine a tornado warning issued for your town by the weather service, but accuweather says it ain't so... or vice versa.

Image you lived in the ATL. Accuweather issues a tornado warning for your city. The weather service does not.... who do you believe? Some forecaster in PA or someone who is actually in the area forecasting for it?

I'm not looking forward to all of the confusion this will be causing....

there's ups and downs to that arguement.

the way the AF works, right now at least, is that we have 7 hubs that cover the entire globe, and it's those forecasters at the hubs that make the forecasts, and issue warnings.

the thing, really, is to have good communication. if i'm a good forecaster, then it doesn't matter where i forecast for. however, if i'm going to issue a warning for a tornado to hit, for example, Whiteman AFB in missouri, i'm going to call them up and say, "hey, how's it looking on your end? i want to issue....etc...etc...".

if comm is good....then it works. if it sucks, then the whole process falls to pieces. .

so if accuweather actually spoke w/ NWS and they came up with something together, then that would make sense. but for them to just put out something; yet the NWS does not....well....

I agree with the ups and downs...

From an email to a colleague:

If the warnings are just to non-media clients like railroads or businesses or other entities, then I'm for it. But, if this is for media use, then I'm totally against it. I hope to never see a situation where my local tv station says that the NWS issued a tornado warming for northern cook country but Accu Weather does not have a warning or vice versa. This would cause utter confusion to the general public further putting our profession at risk of insult.
