Well I completely agree that the people are cold as ice and hard as rocks (although you are looking at a particular segment of Russians - the Jewish-Russians from Ukraine and rural areas, they're a completely different breed than people currently living in Moscow, for example, so keep your perspective straight).
If you'll notice, a lot fewer Russian immigrants are coming to America than before, almost none. Moscow is Europe's new star, according to even magazines like Forbes. It is the hottest city in terms of entertainment, economic activity, nightlife, etc. It has even eclipsed Berlin, London, and other big cities. Have you read "Forbes' 10 hottest cities in the world" lately?
One more thing to note. The fact that there is a lot of political/VIP crime in Russia doesn't mean that the crime in everyday Russia is exorbitant. Provided that one stays out of the "VIP" circle of politicians and oligarchs, downtown America is actually much scarier.
