It sounds quite different compared to the hardware unit. But even the WAVES version doesn't need to sound pumpy, it's all in the input gain and ratio settings. also the modern setting is a bit less emphasized, but yeah it's easy to overdo stuff.
But that's advise in general, a little bit goes a long way.
