I think that most people tend to have racist tendencies, whether they know it or not. But it's not as though racism is the worst thing in the world. Sure, it's the result of ignorance more often than not, but racism, in and of itself, is just sort of a stupid idea that people get - nothing more. All too often, people hear about racism and just clench up, like it's some big horrible thing that's going to hurt a lot of people or imprison us and do all sorts of other bad things. Not that I am necessarily defending racism, but I wish more people could actually recognize that there is a difference between a person who is racist and a person who is likely to maim or kill somebody based on race - they are two different sorts of people, even if they hold different degrees of the same values.
That being said, I think that race is almost entirely a social construction and one that is not really based upon any sort of actual human characteristics other than those assigned to people through their social upbringing. Which is why I have no qualms being racist every now and then - most of the time, it's actually quite funny just because of how stupid it is. Nothing quite so humbling as introspective analysis at times.
