One thing to add on this, and it's maybe redundant, but still something to think about - what kinda music are you planning to play? Take a look and see what the format availability is. For most EDM stuff, you're ok, you can find it on Vinyl - but just be sure that you can get vinyl for your chosen genre.

CD covers all bases - even if the music's only available on vinyl, you can just buy a deck (see the thread 'A dumb question') and transfer the music to CD. (and you can also incorporate the turntable with the CD decks, to give you another string to your bow (repetition from the aforementiond thread).

Of course, SSL/FS etc kinda gets round the problem too...

But until then - make sure what you want to play is available on vinyl.

I'm mainly going to be doing house... and already thought about the availability. If I get Torq/SSL and use turntables, I'll be able to use songs in any format, whether they be vinyl, cd, or mp3.

Yeah, that's why I put in the 'this may be redundant' part.

For what it's worth - I used to be a complete vinyl dinosaur - then I got to use the 1000's - bought myself a pair of them, and am finding myself using the 1210's less an less - purely because of the versatility.

I still think vinyl DJing LOOKS better from an aesthetic and romantic point of view, and there's still a perception from some people of it taking more skill to DJ on vinyl than on CD - but the things I can do with just the 1000's and a mixer far outweight what I can do with just two 1210's and a mixer.

Deep down, you probably know the answer to this - as it's your preference - just listen to the voice inside your head...

(unless it's saying a) Eat more chocolate or b) Kill someone...)

Just planning to play MP3s or WAVs? then CDJs. No use getting turntables if your not going to use vinyl. Vinyl is expensive...and it takes up space! With 300gb hard drives out there....space is no problem for MP3s or WAVs. Also the availability of tracks is much greater digitally, as you don't have to wait for something to become available if it's sold out. Unless you have a vinyl shop around you. But those are becoming fewer and far between. Sure some tracks take a little longer to be released digitally, but it seems like more and more are being released first digitally, or exclusively digital. But then again, it depends on the style you play.

The worst thing about vinyl is old records might not get re-pressed so it could be hard or expensive to get them, unlike cdj where you could just go on beatport etc.

Hmm... there are some good points being made... So, should I just save the money and get the CDJ-200s, and not worry about learning vinyl?

at this point, id really go with some cdj's. vinyl is cool and all...but for a beginner its much more cost effective(well for anyone) to go with cdj's. when yuo are older and you want to go vinyl(if its still going ) then do so.

Getting Vinyl is a waste. More to carry more to deal with. Plus, the versatility you have with CDJ's far out weighs that of Vinyls.

tech 1200s + SSL, cant go wrong imo, best of both worlds...

and buy your techs used, check craigslist or ebay, you can get a pair of used ones for under 500 typically, and they are usually in very good condition.

i got mine on CL for 500 awhile back, they were in perfect condition, so YAY for me!
