I'm pretty sure they weren't using them as shields, though I can't say for sure since I wasn't there... I would be willing to bet that the media distorted that whole situation to reflect badly on them.

What was probably going on is that they were standing up for what they believe in to the point that they were willing to sacrifice their lives, which I guess would be an admirable thing in their society. We Americans don't know shit about that kind of thing; we take a lot of shit from our government, and they know we're very complacent with material garbage and safe and easy 9 to 5s.

Either that, or they knew the israeli policy of potentially standing down when nonviolent groups of civilians formed in an area (which is probably not a policy of the israelis as much as it is a policy of the west - that's us - linked into their diplomacy options)
