The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Empires "crumble" (though, really, no true empire has ever truly died)
Society "fails" (really though, things just change and people are resistant to change)
War claims the lives of many, some "innocent", some not. (war has always done this - perhaps this is the very underlying utility of war in the first place. War is here to stay. Get used to it.)
We are running out of resources! (some time ago, we had hunted whales almost to extinction. What were we to do?! Without whale blubber to fuel our machines, how will we possibly survive??? Obviously, things changed. Attitudes however, did not.)
All in all, the world is going to Hell in a hand basket. Kind of like it always has...
There is no greater apotheosis of the human condition, there is no grand society free of prejudice and acceptant of all individuals, there is no greater meaning to the civics of human duty and compassion or monolithic undertaking of human technology, deity in scale, emancipator of the free mind and master of the multiverse. It's just people. Always has been, probably won't always be, but for a long while, that's all we've got - person to person is all that ever truly matters.
Fuck the isms, they won't get people anywhere.
