FXpansion DR-005 is a cut-down, free version of FXpansions high-end drum sampler DR-008 . I haven't used it myself, but I know that the DR-008 has gotten off with some quite impressive review results. Music Tech Mag has rated it as a 9, you can read the entire review here , and Keyboard Mag has reviewed it here . You can download FXpansion DR-005 here .
Apart from that one, there are some other free drum samplers, among them is Computer Music's SR-202, which comes free each month on the cover disk of Computer Music , or can be downloaded from KVR here . The last one I know of, is Manytone's 3S which uses LinPlugs audio engine. More info at Manytone's website , or at KVR .

I haven't tried any of these, but from the looks of it they're quite decent. Still, I'd recommend trying out one of the high-end samplers like Battery or Kontakt. Downloading a demo wouldn't hurt

I'm not sure, but it shouldn't be too hard to make some basic loops with it. Just drag an Impulse sampler to a midi track, create a new midi clip on the track and put it on your arrangement, then start drawing / keying in your drum patterns, and when it sounds good you can render the loop.

One tip, like i often do myself... ReWire Reason to Live = True Love

Haha, no serious it works really good together. I love the Redrum so i just connect Reason as a external sound source and use Redrum.

How to...if you got ehm both!

1. Start up Live
2. Start up Reason
3. Select channel - Audio from (drop down menu) - Select Reason - Then slelect the master channel input in the second drop down menu.

Read more about it here: http://www.ableton.com/pages/rewire/home

Hope it helped some!

Cheers
C

I'm pretty sure RJT doesn't own a copy of Reason. He said he used Reason on a friend's computer.
