Hmmm, interesting topic.
Other than lowering the alcohol age to 18, discouraging urban planning that spreads cities apart rather than focusing on keeping it closer so people are closer to basic things, encouraging people to rely less on their automobiles starting with good urban planning, legalizing cannabis, amongst other things, I was thinking about an educational system which I thought would work better. I remember in High school when I was in classes with people who didn’t want to do anything after school, never had any plans to, and then became mechanics or some other trade. And then, I think about how much of my high school was wasted because the classes had to cater to these people who didn’t care. I think if those people were given other options and high school focused more on building the skills that most universities impose in the first 2 years, then college could focus more on perfecting whatever it is you are studying. So here’s my idea:
Education is Mandatory for all kids up to the age of 15 (learning a second language is also instituted at the age of 10 and followed through until the end of their high school career), at which time they can choose to drop out and work, go to a vocational school and learn a trade for 4 years, or continue until 18 in an education program with higher standards placed on the liberal arts (reading, writing, philosophy, critical thinking, logic, ect.). It is at that time that the students can pursue an education in college for another 4 years, in which case the 4 years would accomplish the equivalent of both a Bachelors and Masters, because all of the previous work that builds critical thinking and knowledge would have been covered to the students who weren’t pursuing a trade or working and finished the last 3 years in high school. After both the students studying a trade and the university educated students graduate, they would have to go under an apprenticeship for 2 years. After that, they have to test for a certification which will grant them a professional grade in their line of work.
The idea of this educational idea is to promote the idea of quality in work, knowledge of what you do, and that it not be rushed. The people in the work force will truly be masters of what they do. This process will weed out the people who might have strengths in other areas instead of keeping them in high school until 18 just to earn a diploma. They can pursue trades and become masters of their work.
Also, I’d split America in 3 because I think everybody and everything would function better. America is too big for its own good.
