There are enough people that are active to make me say with comfort that we are in dire need of new mods. There are plenty of threads that pop up in there that need closed, and then there are the "invasions" of local boards which wasn't rectified for quite some time. We need at least two c0r mods if not three which are consistently active and diligent.

And this forum is here for us to debate and make suggestions. So leaving it all up to the mods goes against the purpose of this particular forum. I'm only stating that the admin/mods should decide the new mods and people shouldn't be applying for a mod position as it clearly isn't going to get you anywhere.

Modding the COR is thankless job. I think a lot of people don't seem to realize that if they were to become a mod, they'd have to stop screwing around themselves and take constant shit from members.

Del's aim is to keep spam and abuse off the boards. It's understandable that many members want to get rid of the cruft, but it's ultimately not that important. The bigger a community grows, the lower the ROI of central management becomes (as long as it's secure). Shit happens, I sit in traffic for 45 minutes coming home because a handful of people don't know how to drive, but that doesn't mean we'd be better off with 80 police cruisers strewn across the highway.

Or maybe I'm wrong. Even if I am, I think you people have made your point. You want more mods in the COR. He heard you the first time and I'm sure if he finds someone viable, he'll make the arrangements.

(That comment is not directed to the OP, by the way - just stated generally. The whole COR thing was largely off-topic anyway.)

Kind of an odd comparison to make. I can somewhat see your point, but it's definitely not comparing apples to apples and I don't find it entirely applicable to the situation.

I think it applies directly. Im on boards with lots of mods, one time I posted a misleading link (to log you out hehe), it was taken down and I was warned within 2 minutes. there is always someone watching almost every thread and their forum runs smoothly.

I think the weakness in your argument is that we are in dire need of more mods. When I compare what goes on in the CORe and what goes on in the other heavily moderated forums im on I see no difference. You will still get trolls, alts, and funny lil games like clone wars and invasions.

The board is alive and well. There maybe times of 'trouble', but those are taken care of relatively quickly. the board is fine as is, and will survive as is for a while.

It's quite simple really - you're talking about a process (monitoring / security) that doesn't scale well. There's no way to effectively partition the workload between moderators. There's no way to ensure effective communication between the moderators and resolve disputes between them. Eventually - and rather quickly - you reach a point of diminishing returns when they start impeding the flow rather than helping it.

One mod per forum is perfect partitioning. Anything more has to be properly coordinated in order to be effective, and it rarely is. People think the problem can be solved by just throwing more resources at it but that's not how it works in the real world. Any more than two moderators really have to be "managed"; exactly two CAN work well together but only if they're both very good at it and very dedicated. If even one starts to slack or show nepotism then the whole thing can fall apart and end up creating even more work for the one mod who was bearing the load in the first place.

My reason for the traffic analogy should be obvious, then - having more police doesn't necessarily stop people from doing the wrong thing, but it will often slow traffic (both physical and web), and it turns into a management nightmare very quickly.

Wow, i dont think theres been a thread with my name in so many times lol.

To give people an insite on how members become mods, for the last few years me and swamper have talked almost daily on TA on situations, issues, or generally anything that needs to be discussed on the site.

Appointing new mods has generally been by somebody noticing a space where there is a mod shortage, and then mods suggesting members we feel are suitable and recommending them to Swamper.

To be totally honest, the last year atleast I've been behind spotting mod vacancies and recommending suitable candidates to Swamper, and approaching the candiate themselves asking if they wish to do it. If they said yes, and Swamper agree's, they've become a mod.

If I am replaced in MD and CORe, expect the other mods and Swamper to discuss possible candidates themselves and then somebody will PM who they decide on.

I've never known anybody get a mod position by 'applying', mods are headhunted for use of a better word.
