Yes, you could also try a tracker like ModPlug, but I didn't bother to recommend that because he'd still have to go and hunt down samples. With Buzz you can get a bunch of free generators that work more or less like any other software instruments.

Certainly not as feature-packed as a commercial sequencer - you sort of get what you pay for with the UI - but still not a bad starting point for a beginner who's not sure if he wants to shell out all the dough for Cubase or even Fruityloops or Reason.

Splash 50 bucks on Phrazor, it IS worth it! You can you Buzz, sure, but Phrazor is just an ingenious tool that'll make you experience alot more pleasurable!

Then get yourself some nice free vst plugins from kvraudio.com, my favorite freewares are:
Synths:
Hahaha CS-33 (alot better than the name implies!)
Polyiblit
Triangle II (for that fat monophonic bass)
Synth-1 (it can make supersaws if that's what interests you )
Augur

Percussion:
Odo's Dr Fusion and Livetweaker for drumsynthesis (they are a one-stop solution to all your electronic percussion needs!)
LoopaZoid (drum sampler)

Effects:
LFX1310 (multi-effect)
Blockfish (compressor)
Glitch
GlaceVerb (great reverb)

I think that was Sean Walsh.

I'd give Buzz a go if I were you. It's free. It's a good place to start. Don't go splashing the cash before you know for sure that producing is really for you.
