Pointless discussion. This is all a matter of taste, which is a pointless issue to debate,as each individual will have its own opinion,no matter what poeple say about the issue in question. But anyways,I love Oakey now.Travelling(UK version of Another World)and the '94 Essential Mix blew me off my feet, and he never ceases to stir up emotions in me when he spins nowadays.Add the fact he has done so much for the trance scene(Perfecto Recs and LOTS and LOTS of remixes and productions for instance)and music in general(signing Salt n Pepa and Jazzy Jeff, producing Happy Mondays etc.,etc),and you've got the reason why he has my utmost respect, even though I think many of his earlier sets contained some bad track selections here and there.(CD2 on GU007 for instance,a mixed bag.)Whether you like him nowor before is a matter of taste as I said, but I'll always respect him for what he has done in the past. What I don't get though is why people say he has "sold out".Is that because he plays somewhat progressive now (which is a real band-wagon genre right now,no pun inteded)instead of the usual trance he did before?

Oakey

Why do people slag this man for making money? He needs to be able to eat hamburgers like the rest of us. Dont hate him because he is a cash cow right now, hate him because he plays the same songs almost each nite with horrid programming and crappy mixing.
I too was introduced to music by this guy and still like him. Everytime I go to see him play Im always giving him one more chance to show he is the man. And frankly the last couple times Ive seen him I could do the exact same thing he is doing.

I don't know how anyone can say he sold out, because he hasn't hit the charts big time, he's not publicly stated that somethings sucked then done the exact opposite of what he's said. I know he's been touring with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and other bands, but thats nothign new, he's always toured with bands...New Order, Stone Roses, U2 etc..., and you gotta remember people like us voted him the best DJ in the world in 1999, and no matter who you are, it's going to go to your head.
And so he plays a few commerical tunes now and again, so what, he may like them, and it's the minority that go against him, cos you can guarentee that if you advertise Oakie at your club it'll be packed, because he is the most famous DJ in the world, and IMO in the top 5 best DJ's in the world
my 2 cents
PS if can someone please give a detailed answer to why he sold out, and not just "cos he played commerical crap" or some shit like that. If he played commerical tracks tell us which ones

The only thing that pisses me off about Oakenfold, is that he's given credit were it IS NOT due. Oakie sucks now. It's a fact. Compare his recent sets to his sets from 97 or 98 or 99...no comparison whatsoever. Mainstream trash claiming he's the best DJ in the world is complete bullshit. Sasha, Hybrid, PvD, AvB, Nick Warren, Digweed and countless others are all better than him right now. Oakenfold at his prime would easily rank in the top 3, with PvD and Hybrid (them 2 are my fav ) But he is average now.

Most famous? Yes, he probably is. But I'll be damned if an Oakenfold show ever sells more tickets faster than a PvD or S&D show.

Thats my opinion.

EXACTLY!!

it's not soo much that oakey was on the radio playing crap that bugged me. it's that they introduce him as the world's best dj and the worlds best & most sought after remixer.

EXCUSE ME????

my mate jon saw him 2 weeks back and said he played the second best set he's ever seen in his life, mixing spot on, track selection spot on, back to the EM days of 99, and thats NOW not 1 and 2 years ago, the guy rules, face it

i would like to see anyone of us pull in a crowd like Oakey or PvD or any of the other guys. I think if you have the skills, might as well use them.

Well, until I hear something from him live or on mp3 that compares to his old days even slightly, he will not be on my list of current top djs/producers/remixers. This list includes Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren, Sasha, Nick Warren, Orkidea and Hybrid. These people deserve the "props" that Oakenfold gets at the moment. True, very few of these guys had the influence Oakenfold had back then..but this isn't 'back then', this is now...and now, they are at the top of electronic music. Not Oakenfold.

Yes...but Oakenfold isn't using his skills...the only reason he pulls in the crowds is because he is "the best DJ in the world, and the most famous one at that." According to the radio...

Thats cos he remixes what he wants to, doesn't get hired in to mix stuff, he does it when he wants. TBH I can't even think of a bad remix the guys ever done, theres been a couple of bad productions (Bites da dust for one, what were you thinking ), but the good to bad ratio is ceratinly higher than a lot of top producers. Don't want to seem like I'm shagging the guy in the ass too much but he's one of pioneers of dance music, and without him we wouldn't have trance as we know it.
