This isn't really that uncommon any more. I live in Waterloo Region Ontario, which is home to the largest mennonite population outside of PA. I know a great many mennonites as my grandmother grew up in the heart of their community. Just like any other christian sect they range in how ardently they adhear to their religious beliefs. There are many "old order" families that still don't have electicity or vehicles or anything of the trappings of modernety. Some will have phone lines for business purposes but no other technology. Some have electicity or gas heat, some have mechanized farm equipment, some have cars, some have all the trappings of modern life. Oddly enough there really is no hard fast rule for what technologies they are allowed and what they are not, it's a judgement call on their part.
One thing I must say is that I have never known any persons who practice the Christian ideals of charity, pacifism, loveing thy neighbour, and humility with more conviction then the old order mennonites I know. I can also say I know very few people who are as content with their lives then these people.
BTW, they actually have their own car insurance company here in Ontario.
