I just bought a Korg k25

its sweet!! The finger XY thing rocks to control effects ( on XY plane) or you can use it as mouse (you can click it too)
It looks much better in real life. And doesn't feel cheap. ( I tried M-audio 02 and oxygen and didn't like them as much )

Yes, the Axiom 49 is very good! I hardly use the pads, though. They aren't very responsive. The infinite rotary knobs are kind of useless, seeing how MIDI only accepts values from 0-127 to begin with.

I think you fail to understand the point of infinite rotary controllers

they send +1/-1 data, and not their current position. The good thing about that comes throught when linking the controllers to some knobs on your vst. If you load a vst and the filter freq (for example) has a value of 32 and your non-infinite knob is set on 78 it will make a huge jump once you move your non infinite knob to somewhere around that value of 78. The infinite knob just sends a + or - command which ensures you to not having to deal with these naste leaps, which can mess up your automation real bad if used wrong .

I have an Oxygen49, and I like it for production stuff. I have no idea how to use it for live applications with 2 cdj-200's and a djm-400. Maybe someone can clue me in

Wrong. From the MIDI specification, it says clearly that the knob values can only be from 0-127. I tested this hypothesis by reading a hex dump of the MIDI data produced by me turning the knob back and forth. The knobs themselves are infinite, but at a certain point, it stops sending data. You can even see it on the Axiom LCD. Here's the documentation:

quote:
Controller

Status

0xB0 to 0xBF where the low nibble is the MIDI channel.

Data

Two data bytes follow the Status.

The first data is the controller number (0 to 127). This indicates which controller is affected by the received MIDI message.

The second data byte is the value to which the controller should be set, a value from 0 to 127.

So, I bought the Axiom 49 a while back, and I'm very pleased with that decision.

I MIGHT be coming to the conclusion that rotary encoders are worthless without some feedback (like the behringer BCR unit) while adjusting effects parameters. In Ableton, scrolling scenes with the lower right encoder is quite handy though, triggering clips in the selected scene with the corresponding button under the faders, which correspond to each track.

As far as the pads? I can't compare them to other drum/trigger pads as far as velocity and sensativity... but I can say that it is INCREDIBLY useful for momentary effects in Ableton. Hitting a pad, then 'Ctrl Assign' then (-) to select 146 (or 147? it's in the instructions) makes the pad send an on message when pressed and held, and an off message when released. Just download Glitch and throw it in there and suddenly I'm wasting hours on end cutting and reversing loops and beats...

Sigh... there's not enough time in the day.
