Ted would just save up to buy a sick amp later on - perhaps replacing the warm sound of the vintage one he just lost

I got a used QSC 850 (for $200) that worked fine, but I would be suspicious of paying $60 for an amp unless it's either really old or poorly made. Sometimes paying a little extra for something that you know is in good shape..is better than going on the cheap for something just because your on a budget. If $400 is his budget, there's lots of decent amps for $200 - $400.

Check your local craigslist. People are giving amps away. You can find $400 amps that are 2 years old for under $100. Crap out on me? The owner that sold it to me had it sitting in his closet... it was a gift... he watched DVDs on it for a year or so... enter me... now I blast thing thing HARD every day... hasn't hiccupped once.

I'd rather spend the extra $300 on a CDJ or something.

I'd go with craigslist also. I piced up a crown ps-400 and crown ps-200, both great old school amps for $100 each. You should be able to find something inexpensive no problem on craigslist. QSC rmx is good, stay away from crown ce series or some of the newer budget crown stuff.

Behringer amps arn't all that bad.

I too used to use an old skool amp from the 70's (Sony). I replaced my speakers (my speakers were prob from the 50's lol) then found out the amp connectors were far too small to fit the big fat bi-wire cabling I also bought. At the time I had all my set up crammed onto a tabletop so if the amp moved even a *tiny* bit, an hour of hardcore swearing followed whilst trying to jam the bi-wiring around the tiny screw fixings

In the end I had enough so gave it away to a new loving home & bought a pre owned Cambridge Audio A5 amp off eBay for only £50 (just under 100 US dollars). It's won plenty of awards plus it looks kinda nice. Well worth a look if you can get them in US
