TDM is good because of the plugins though, so doesn't really apply for this TBH, I don't understand the fuss about pro tools. I understand that its really good to have the DSP chips, but we have the virus, liquid mix and origin (soon) now, so surely that handles all that stuff off the computer. That said, I think that the mix engine being off the cpu is also really good, so thats another advantage. But unless TDM also does midi and editing and mixing differently to LE, please give me live any day! I wish that live could do all of the stuff that say cubase or DP could do, plus take advantage of Pro tools mix engine and DSPs, then you would have the ultimate DAW!

1) I read the original question in this thread as such that if one was to evaluate a DAW from the standpoint of what the DAW does without the VST's, without the plug-ins, without anything but the DAW itself, which would you choose. By itself for the sole purpose of mixing and editing, ProTools is king. This is why it's the industry standard. It uses less resources and is the most effective. Go into ANY professional recording studio and you'll find ProTool there.
2) I'm a PC guy. Have been for years. When I first got into professional recording, I did my best to use ProTools on the PC. It's not nearly as effective. For ProTools to work effectively on PC, you'd have to really boost your PC up to handle the load and push the multitasking limits of a Windows PC environment. Sadly, I had to get a Mac just to run ProTools.
3) The MBox/ProTools LE package is not only the low-end of the ProTools environment. It's great for basic plug-in and record type of functions, but if your serious about recording ProTools M or HD3 are best. Both of which (software only) cost about $875. If you want a decent HUI to go with it, you're looking into yet another $500+ that works with it. Add in the extra storage space and monitor needed to effectively use this program, you're running yourself into a couple thousand dollars.
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not at all dissing any other DAW. There are alot of others out there that are equally effective for general purposes and digital production purposes. As I mentioned, I'm partial to Ableton Live right now. I'm coming to find that it works really well for my purposes. Which is why I say, use what works for you.
Because in the end, it comes out the speakers in stereo anyway.

Pish! Mic in the middle of the room and cut straight to laquer!
In all seriousness even the freeware tools that are kicking around these days are significantly better than commercial software of a few years ago.
Try a bunch, find something you can live with and learn it inside out. Knowing how to use a simple tool well is better than pratting about with something you don't understand.
There is no one size fits all best product, find what works for you.

By pure DAW he means one that has the highest concentration of DAW crystals, with no photoshop or microsoft word cut with it.
Pure DAWs deliver a smoother high when ingested or snorted and you know, only real men use them.
Also, MBOX2 runs Pro Tools LE and it has a channel limit. Which just isn't my cup of darjeeling.
