You are right, the loop will stop if you put your hand on it but don't forget he is also using an EFX500 that incorporates various effects such as delay, transform, jet, pan and all sorts of stuff. What he is doing is actually quite simple but sounds cool.
You can scratch as you want on the 800, but the deck is only the sound source. It's what you do with the faders and effects that really makes the difference.

I'm wondering if I can mimick this by using the delay or echo effect on my djm-400?
I'm not worried about the transform part here, I'd just like to be able to keep the soung while touching the top of the platter.

It'll show you pretty much what he's done in the last video (though the tunes are different to protect the innocent)...
(the scratch sample's the same though.) |
aside from the crazy scratching, and the potential to learn a thing or two from him... does anyone wanna hang with him, just cuz? he seems like quite the character.....

No, I don't think so with the 400. On the 909 you can. The echo on the EFX-500/1000 is really a hold echo (which is the name of the effect on the 909) when at full depth.
I think he was referring to the sound Eddie was using. It just sounds like your everyday synth tone, made into a short loop.
