OK, I think it's time for me to say something about Avalon and it's vibe. If you didn't notice, I've been dead quiet about everything. What I'm going to say is of my own accord. I am saying this a fan of EDM and kick ass energy.
I am sure everyone is pretty aware of that I hate Avalon with a passion. Not the venue, but the crowd, the vibe.
When I first caught wind of the news of course I was a bit..well, I wanted to throw things, lol. But then it took pretty much one sentence to make me say, "OK, be patient." ... and it was to the tune of, "Remember how everyone acted when Spundae went at Ruby Skye?"
In 2003, I would say Ruby Skye was like the little evil sister of Avalon in San Francisco. A place that was in second place on my most hated list, a little behind Avalon. Ruby Skye then had a very similar crowd. Shallow, ego, obsessive, hollywood, wants to get drunk, cracked out, whatver...they didn't give a rats ass about the music and only cared about themselves and how they were perceived. What made Avalon worse is that it's a bit of a dingier place and can hold more people. Ruby Skye is like upscale outside and in.
When Spundae left Ten15 (which could bring the best vibe around back then, better than any LA vibe ) and went mainly to the new club Mezzanine, everyone was pretty accepting. Mainly because it was a new place with a bit of an underground feel. Prob with Mezzanine then and still now is that it's a word-of-mouth or too of a DJ-centric place. People just don't go to Mezz just to be at Mezz. It's why these days it's mainly a concert venue and not that much of an EDM venue. Anyhow, then Spundae started doing a lot of Friday nights at Ruby and people were raging mad. Including myself. I was pissed. One of my fav promoters around suddenly booking at the place in SF I hated the most.
But you know what? Since they started going to Ruby Skye, it's only made both Spundae SF and Ruby Skye better. The vibe today at Spundae events at Ruby Skye has progressively gotten better over time; it's like night-and-day compared to when Spundae first started doing events there. It's also allowed Spundae SF to become more well-rounded on the talent they bring to SF. Looking back to how things were at the end of its Ten15 tenure, pretty much Spundae SF was bringing in largely all trance DJs. But these days, it's definitely well-rounded.
So seeing what has happened here, I am actually pretty calm and going to be patient to see what can happen at Avalon. And I just suggest everyone else be too. As much as everyone can complain, it's you all who will be a large part of any change that can occur. Yes, there are other things that surely need to be addressed and I imagine those concerns have at least been expressed, or at least I hope so...cause I truly don't know. Anyhow, it's a matter of being supported and doing your best to help the scene thrive no matter the venue. Let's hope things go well so the scene in LA can continue to thrive.
Dave out.
