However, I agree with his statement. I have a Compaq tc4400 tablet/laptop with fingerprint security and a wireless card. rarely ever use my pc anymore and I take it everywhere with me, it's nice and tiny too.

Macbook or Pc laptop?

If I get a macbook would be a problem to use in Asia? Or would it be a better idea to get a Pc laptop? Ideally I'd like to spend 1200 or less.

I don't play games, so all I'd really need is to download stuff, surf web and maybe fiddle with some music programs. I'm thinking that since I don't play games i can sacrafice some processor speed for more memory?

Thanks.

Get an R Series Lenovo. Beautifully designed, and keyboard ergonomics are incredibly well thought out. Should be everything you need.

the ONLY thing i would say that i would HIGHLY recommend is a full size keyboard. fuck that compact keyboard shit. your wrists will hurt a lot after a few months. mine did and i still have problems at times and im not even on a laptop much anymore.

I'd say go with a Macbook. Once you move you can just buy the Apple World Travel Adapter Kit and have no problems what-so-ever. Also, if you go with something with Windows on it, you're going to have to deal with a pre-SP1 Windows operating system, which never ends well.

Nah not really... I use my macbook for tons of stuff. However, all of my torrenting, webserver, and fileserver is run by my Ubuntu server. I rarely play video games anymore, since all of my spare time goes towards practicing mixing, and I rip movies on my PC partially because it uses so many resources that you really can't do anything else while ripping, and I have 4 drives .

Buying any form of computer equipment around the world should really never be a problem.
They all tend to have switching power supplies which function with 110 or 220 volts. You just need plug adapters or different detachable power cords.

But the biggest issue is the WARRANTY!
Be careful because a lot of companies do NOT honor a warranty if you are trying to make a claim outside the country of purchase.

You also need to be clear if you have specific desires about going with a super lightweight laptop or not ( there are some fairly decently priced models but a lot of these tend to usually be in the upper price range ).

I'm looking for about 5 lbs or so something i guess in the thin and light category.

those ultraportbales usualy dont' have an optical drive and having an external one just doesn't appeal to me.

Can you run ubuntu on a mac?

Are torrents for cross platform use? say if i had a mac and i'm using torrents can i only download from other mac torrent users or can i download from all torrent users?
