Not familiar with the Karma but here is some general advice:
- If it's got ADAT, use that.
- If it doesn't have ADAT, but does have S/PDIF, use that.
- If both your gear and audio interface has balanced XLR ins/outs, use those.
- If you've got no other choice, just connect a regular cable to your line in.
- Integrated sound on the motherboard is shit, period, and you should avoid it at all costs. I don't think the Live 5.1 is so great either, Creative's cards were not production-quality until the Audigy (they're still consumer-grade but they're "good enough"). I suggest just spending the 25 bucks to get the cheapest Audigy2 you can find.
You shouldn't be getting clipping from a synth to your line in. If you are, it either means your synth is clipping (doubtful), or you're boosting the signal somewhere (many sound cards allow you to boost input signals although it's usually done on mic preamps, not line ins). Something might also be boosted in your sequencer. Although, if you've got your line in fader cranked and it sounds OK at say, half scale, it could just be that the card is crap and clips at those volumes.
About your delay question, you have to word it better, because I don't understand what you're asking as written.
