With Stu on this on,

When I come on after another DJ I like to let people know that the DJ has changed and will often look to change something and give a different feel.
Usually something bouncy but not over pronounced so not too radical a change, but just enough to inject some fresh energy.

To finish a set, that just depends on what grabs me at the time. If I'm not the last DJ then I just play my last track, wait for the guy to mix and then go (obviously). But last track of the night, I will sometimes get two copies of the same track, then to the classic stop and hear it slow down jobby and put an effect on it, and wait for the lights to come on if they haven't already. If I have an EFX I will usually loop the a segment of the slowing down effect and keep that running and then throw in the second breakdown when it kicks back in another time. Doesn't work with all records but it's another way of doing the final track, then just let it play out.

Cheers
Nem

Personally i cant stand people who use cheasy over dramatic intros outtros...
Worst I heard was some guy close his set with the end of a loony toons cartoon "dibidee dibidee thats all folks". I guess his entire set was crap too but nonetheless if I had something sharp on me at the time he would have been stabbed in the eye.

I think starting a set with a short ambient piece is cool. But longer intros are better for mixed CDs/recording sets, vs. playing out IMO. So it works better at home vs. at a party or club.

Agreed. But I've been to nights where every DJ used an ambient intro - got boring after the 1st time tbh.

I just find a track that has a good intro and a good ending.

Psytrance mostly has all of this.

Yeah but if it's only like two or three minutes long, it's nice, hardly noticeable. I mean what often happens, is the DJ plays a track with a rather long intro or an ambient intro, and it is just as good as using either a small part of an ambient track, or just a short ambient track. You can find plenty of those on Beatport, like ambient versions of dance tracks, and they work out really well.

Just wanted to thank you for that post. I've been passing by that tune in favour of playing The Fusion - over and over - played it last night for the first time in ages, and re-fell for it.

I still think the Fusion has a better hook, but then, it's a very obvious one.

Ta.

I play a David Attenborough documentary for the first hour

and usually I close with something like some Al Jazeera/crazy rioting/angry noises ( Allahu Akbar works quite well! or preferably a mother crying over the death of her son etc )

instant eye opener and ear closer
