Thanks for the posts guys! I'll read these when I have the time and also sometimes when mixing at lower levels, your ears catch a lot of the mid frequencies. This happens because the human ear perceives these as louder than the rest. So every once in awhile, pump up the volume and see how the highs and low end sounds. Also, I find that mixing on headphones is good sometimes if you know your headphones well. Just always reference back to those monitors to hear how it sounds through both ears. That's just my two cents.

I haven't read that huge post yet...

but what helps me the best is to get away from the project entirely. when i work on something for hours everyday i get used to the way it sounds. take a vacation from the track for a week or more. when you come back, it will sound totally different, and perhaps more 'objective' in comparison to the other stuff you've been listening to.

anyways... thats what helps me a lot.

It's gets quite frustrating at times..
So if anyone's got some tips to share... I'm all ears.

That is pretty much exactly what happens to me. When I'm flogging a dead horse I just stop and do something else. Then come back to it later. It seems like the only way. These days I've gotten kind of good at telling when I'm starting to fuck up and I'm making stupid and rubbish sounding decisions. The depressing part about that is that it happens alot. Several times per day at least.

In a London Recording Studio one morning, the bleary-eyed Producer and Engineer staggered into the studio after a late night mix the night before, only to find that the Tape-Op had just chopped last nights Marvin Gaye master mix into 6 inch pieces, mistaking it for "gash".

KHAAAAAN!

Yea I do that too. I've read in many magazines and articles that it's good to take a few days off once the arrangement is done, then mix and EQ later.
