Buy Alesis M1 Active MKII. They definately have the best performance/price ratio. Had them compared to KRK RP8 and the M1 Active's did a better job imho. Cost me around 500 bucks here in Ukraine, which means -100 or so in the western world.

lol?? i found krk's to have the most flat and even sound out of all the cheaper monitors (alesis m1 active, behringers, m-audio). how are u going to possibly compare them to mackie's or events which are a level above in price range?

^^^ check TweakHeadz page - there is a section on monitors with reviews of some KRK, Mackie, etc, and a forum with more user comments. Note that this is mostly about music production, which probably requires more sound quality and less loudness than a DJ would need.

Do something different than Rokits..

I'd recommend:

Alesis ProLinear 820DSP.. or 720 to save a bit of cash..

KRK are much better than Alesis and m-audio, theres no doubt about it. I don't even know how people uses Alesis, the bass is so ridiculously uncontrolled it makes my brain hurt. :P

Event have TR6s in the same price range as KRK RP8s and ALP5s in the price range of RP5s. I'll agree that in the low range, the Rockits aren't too bad. For the size of the RP5 they do have a pretty flat response, but the bass has obviously been boosted a wee bit too much by the cabinet design (not very tight). ALP5s don't have as much low end as the RP5s, but they have retained the clarity in doing so.

the bass on Alesis can be controlled by simply stuffing the phase inverters with socks or something (depending on the distance between the monitors and the wall)

anyways, for 500 bucks you cant ask for more

ive actually had the opportunity of checking out the KRK v6's, rp5's and rp8's, stantons and the alesis mk2 series...and let me tell you that after sampling all these hearing the Behringer Truth monitors (actives) blew them all out of the water...unbelievable really considering that for the price (i paid 400 for the pair including shipping within the USA), they are at the same level as monitors twice the price. go for these and you wont regret. loud output and amazingly clear at low levels, great lows (although arguably a little accented at the very lowest frequencies), clear highs and nearly 100% flat frequency response. these are great!

did you check out any events? and i agree about krk and alesis, both shit in terms of reference- truths win in that dept but are nothing special, i would hate to produce on behringers when theres is better for similar price, or a slight bit more.
