Wait, isnīt it like a step back for Tiesto? Every bedroom dj and his mother has a regular show already and he decides to start one now? |
Thats a strong point, but a bit out of place. Because every bedroom DJs mother doesnt have access to tunes that are fresher than a McDonalds salad menu.
Tiesto's show might be worth tuning into just because it will be of quality, and unreleased material, unlike 90% of the shows out there that feature the best of beatport & ASOT playlist.
If Tiesto was lazy with it - spinning just what he received ahead of time, from the trance scene... then yeah i'd agree what is the point of this?
However, the interviews and comments he's made so far about this indicate he wants to use it to play more experimental styles (hence the PR crap). People can go see him live to hear traffic or whatever. But sometimes perhaps he is limiting himself to playing those tunes live, as its very difficult to appease the crowd by dropping some new tech-house shizznet.
He also wants a speaking role. This for me, goes beyond ASOT just "oh yeah this is a nice one" style, and into the role of presenting a bit more. DJs around Tijs' age, or older, have other side projects to keep them interested, with DJing on the side. Vath runs Cocoon, Oakey filmscores... etc. Tiesto is looking for ways to keep interested, and this is one thing he has always wanted, but perhaps never been able to pull off due to
a) touring
b) no slot at a particularly appealing station. The man is hands on. I don't think that would work at ETN or DI or something like this.
He certainly doesnt need Radio538's money or commitment, so i think he's just doing this for himself. The guy was sick remember. It could be in the aftermath of this recurring illness, the focus had to change and his music has to be sold to the public in a different medium to heavy touring worldwide. He's said himself the number of gigs will have to come down, in order to satisfy the new radio commitments. I jsut think thats a coincidence that he was quite happy to accept when this offer came.
So, i think time has to be served on this before a complete judgement can be made. Club Nouveau is an interesting name too, dont you think? Its not genre-specific. Its not pigeonholing him into playing just trance like ASOT. He will be able to express himself both musically and verbally over the show, and perhaps prove a few haters wrong, who have this impression he's a jerk off with a big wallet and an eye for a fast buck.
my (completely bias) 2c.
