Ik begrijp de verwarring. Iedereen heeft wel een bepaald beeld van retro afhankelijk van zijn/haar achtergrond. In feite zou '95 inderdaad een goed breukjaar kunnen zijn. Maar de vraag ontsproot zich op de laatste editie van Retro house @ Fuse toen Yves Deruyter plots 'Motorcycle - As the rush comes' draaide. Ik hoop dat ik voor iedereen spreek als ik zeg dat ik zelden een plaat zo ongepast heb horen passeren. En wat dan te doen met platen als 'Mory Klein - Kick that bass', 'Zicky - She wanna' of 'Ixxel - Drop that beat' die, los van hun kwaliteit, toch ook algemeen beschouwd worden als retro hoewel ze eind jaren '90 pas uitkwamen? Is daar dan ook een te-belachelijk-voor-woorden-naam voor net als neo-trance?

Daaruit volgt dan nog de vraag wat de maatstaf is vooraleer je kan spreken van een classic? 'love is an ocean' is er uiteraard 1, maar platen als 'as the rush comes' en 'swing 2 harmony' zou ik toch liever pas over enkele jaren op een classicsavond tegenkomen. De grens is vaag, maar er moet toch een soort van consensus of een (kleine) meerderheid zijn die daarover een bepaald beeld heeft.

Het etiket "retro" is imo iets persoonlijks.
Orbital - Halcyon + On + On stamt bijv. al uit begin jaren '90 (Brown Album 1992) maar is de laatste tijd weer flink veel gedraaid en zou ik derhalve als retro betitelen.
Bepaalde New Wave en early rave geluiden uit de jaren 80 en 90 dito.

Retro is voor mij persoonlijk: bepaalde sound(s) vanaf de jaren 80 tot eind jaren 90

Er is een verschil tussen retro en classics, omdat classics altijd binnen een bepaald genre functioneren en de term "retro" grensoverschrijdend werkt en een ruimere beeldinhoud heeft. Dat is bij mij althans het geval. As The Rush Comes is nu reeds als een classic te beschouwen binnen de trancewereld, maar het betreft geenszins een retroplaat omdat het niet om een algemene stroming gaat die overal zijn ingang heeft gevonden. Vroeger waren de verschillen tussen de genres onderling een stuk kleiner, waardoor die nu vaak samen worden genomen en onder één noemer worden geplaatst. Voor iemand die ouder is en meer kennis van zaken heeft ligt dat misschien anders, maar voor mij duidt de term "retro" op de periode 1985-1995. Drop That Beat en Kick Da Bass horen daar niet bij.

Hows, soms een beetje Trance, echt al interessant -> 1995 -> goeie muziek, eigenlijk al Trance -> 1997 -> Trance ->

Ben vorig weekend naar een retroparty geweest in de Cherry Moon, en deze hebben nu wel een serieuze reputatie wat retro betreft. En ik heb daar zowel de hardere platen als 303, Acid Creeck, House of House, House of God, ... als de zachtere platen als Play With The Voices, Hymn, How Much Can You Take gehoord. Dus retro = oud.
