Agreed, the Holst's Planets Suite is amazing.

I used to play Jupiter and Mars in a concert band which was amazing. Probably Jupiter and Venus are my favorites from the planets.

Also:

Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition - particularly The Old Castle from that suite.

Prokofiev - Lieutenant Kije Suite (Particularly the romance, part II)

Rimsky-Korsakoff - Procession of the Nobles - magnificent.

Obviously Phillip glass is great, and if you have not checked out his filmography you should do that as well. (there are three 'qatsis' but koyannisqatsi is the best - interesting note - i saw kenneth thomas play once and koyannisqatsi was on the video monitors) Also check out Iannis Xenakis, & Edgar Varese. Xenakis is of particular interest to me, since he worked for Le Corbusier (the architect of great fame) and I study architecture officially but spend all of my time doing music...

I play classical alto saxophone and as such I like a lot of Alexander Glazunov, Claude Debussy, and also Paul Creston (modern)

Ok, I'm looking to expand my collection again. I've picked up a fair amount of Mahler, Bach, Copeland, Rachmaninoff and Glass since last posting. With the Mahler (particularly "Das Lied von der Erde") I've started to get into a little bit of operatic choral stuff as well, so those suggestions are welcome too.

I used to play trumpet and I still could never really get into Souza. He and Bach's organ pieces are a little too much for me I guess.

I am, however, completely in love with Schumann's "Kinderszenen" at the moment in addition to Mahler.

My take on... (various mixes planned, updated when I can be arsed)

over the last two years i've started listening heavily to classical as well. my interest in production and my attempting to teach myself piano really got me into it and now i'm at a point where it's primarily what i listen to. i try to save a lot of EDM for the club these days.

anyway, i would suggest going to the library and checking out CDs. I go all the time now and they have such an awesome selection to choose from, greater than anything you could hope to buy.

I dunno I mean there is really a ton out there. Do you have a time period that you prefer? I see a lot of good suggestions already, I guess one I would make would be:

Maurice Ravel's Mother Goose Suite.

Everyone knows his Bolero, but this is my favorite work by him, particularly Empress of the Pagodas. It has great instrumentation.

I mean really I like pretty much everyone's music. All of the old masters are great. Just kinda depends on what you like. You can't go wrong with some of the more famous works to start with. Maybe some others to check out would be:

Claude Debussy's Deux Arabesque No 1

Johannes Brahms' Capriccio Op 76 No 1
