educate yourself with some youtube videos. watch the documentary pump up the volume for some chicago house history, and then proceed into techno and trance documentaries. high tech soul is one i can recommend for techno.

I love it so much that ive decided to do my final year thesis on it. if anyone out there can give me more websites to look up or books that give me definitions of trance and techno music it would b excellent. I always get these mixed up adn even musical examples of the difference between these genres would also help loads.
Cheers

I still don't understand how you're doing a thesis on a topic about trance and techno, and you're almost done but don't know the difference between the two? Maybe you're looking at it more from an outsider perspective and not someone who is basically obsessed with the music, which is cool too, I just hope you don't embarrass those who take EDM somewhat seriously. I like the idea how though I'm sure there are some consistent elements of genres over time, the definitions for the genres constantly evolve over time...

[[ LINK REMOVED ]]

It gives a fairly good definition of trance. It doesn't really differentiate between trance and techno, but it's a start.

I think the difference between the two is not something that can be heard from a simple listen-through. It depends more on the way the tracks develop. Techno is more about creative edits and transitions, with a monotonous beat that changes only occasionally. Trance, on the other hand, focuses more on the slow evolution of the beat. Soundwise, the differences tend to be extremely subtle, if they're there at all.
