I got to space rather early to avoid any kind of line fiasco since this was a sold out event.
Space staff actually turned people around who did not have tickets. They said no entry whatsoever unless you had a presale. This kinda ruined the vibe for the first part of Edgar Vs set since it took a bit to fill up the club since only presale entrys were being allowed in.
I for the first time agreed with the staff at space in a long time. I have never seen a bouncer turn someone away offering a grand to get two people in until this night. Peoples only option at this point was to team up with people they didnt know and go in on a vip table.
I got in right when they opened the doors at 10:45. They were having problems with their generator so could not get people in the door using their credit card scanning device for people with will call tickets. Edgar V played an extremely nice warm up set and then some. It actually had to be the best Edgar set I had ever heard and for this I give him the set of the night. His set was extremely progressive and included some good techy stuff. Since I am saying exactly how I felt and I am giving a good review I will say that his set lost some energy between 1 and 2am. I am guessing this was from him not even knowing when Paul would get there. The club has a nice addition, LED boards fully programmed into their lighting system. These are dimmable and produced 7 extremely bright colors. These were a nice touch to space. The sound system was also well tuned.
Paul got on at 2:10am and started off extremely banging. I honestly was so banging in the beginning I thought it was going to be better than November 4th 2005. Paul has really gotten comfortable with Ableton and has a ton of wikkid bass line and beat loops. The tracks were extremely strong and energetic.
The crowd kinda died off due to a couple of things halfway through his set. The terrace fiasco being one. Everyone realizing they probably would not get into the terrace if they didnt try at that point. Paul also went into a much slower BPM and more housey track selection. Things like Mindcircus G&D remix. This kills the space crowd. It worked in NYC when he played last month but I could have told him it wouldnt work at space. None the less it happened. It seemed that most of the people in the mainroom loved the cheesy crap and he played two of his crappy classics to include Nothing but you (blechhhhhh). Whatever good he did was ruined in his last hour or two. I can understand the moving to the slower side during the middle of his set as it is what he does for his extended sets but to continue off it with crap cheese trance was unacceptable. I can say this, the first two hours was phenomenal, it really seemed like he made the bassline loops specifically for space. He even tried to use them on the cheesy crap but it was of no use to me. He had many many different ones though. The sound also was turned down during the middle of his set, I think because the firemarshall was there but later on the sound was resumed at its normal level.
When he got off at 6:15 I immediately made a mad dash for the stairs to get to the terrace. After waiting in line for a little while I decided it was be in my best interest to grease a bouncer. I offered up a small amount of money and got right on up. I normally dont promote this but Oscar Gs set was more minimal than the house I hear in Charlotte, I could not take it any more.
Apparently the situation at the front entrance had taken a turn for the worse and the presale line was the same as the general admission line. People had to end up waiting or paying a lot of money to get in.
Up on the Terrace things were happening as expected. People in a steady groove, dancing and having fun. The music was good, nothing extremely memorable but definitely good and on point. I dont think I heard Sander slip once on the decks for the 4 hours I listened to him. The crowd seemed to be in a good mood too because I didnt notice any fights break out. The upstairs appeared to be at capacity the entire time I was up there.
