Yeah i think he means uplifiting as in those (often trance) tunes with really obvious melodies that the crowd will fall for immediately. It's very easy to get the crowd going with these. Not much skills is required in the track selection. With deeper, more darker tracks the crowd might not have their hands in the air throughout the whole event, but man, it is so much better, and you really feel how the dj is able to control everyone.

I'm a bit neutral in this regard. I think it's a good thing to throw in a few familiar tracks here and there throughout the set. The key is to not overdo it. From a viewpoint of a listener, I must say that all of my favorite live sets were set up in a way, such that the first half consists solely of uncommon tracks and toward the end, more popular tunes are used. A lot of opening DJs do this and I love it.

I don't get the fun in playing only well-known tracks (or only anthem/uplifting), so i think he has a very good point.

I think i will try and focus on this next time i'm mixing (even though i usually don't mix only anthem/uplifting).

I really hate it when a DJ plays the most energetic tune at the very beginning of the set.

You've got to preheat the oven before you stick in the turkey.

He's right in a way. If you play almost unknown tunes and people love it they will run to the booth and ask you what it is!!! Then they're gonna go tell their friends about the awesome Dj that dropped "whatever" tune that night

Yeah I'm talking about DJing. There's nothing worse than playing the more uplifting tunes at the beginning of the set and have the rest of the time be filled with less than steller tunes.

It's also annoying when a DJ just spins eneregic euphoric tunes through his whole set. Really tires you out and makes the climaxes so much less. If you've built your set really well and have one or two energetic tunes towards the end crowd goes absolutely crazy.
