Most people dont realise that there is any difference, they think ram is ram. Well your computer is obviously not even using the new ram because when you computer was made it didnt exist.

ok, that is a little off
PC133 ram is no different than pc100 ram, apart from being able to operate at a higher frequency.

now to the problem:
if the new ram works by itself and you can run windows fine with it, but you have a problem with both sticks, there might be an incompatibility between the modules (that happens sometimes) Mobo manufaturers give you a list of 'recommended ram configurations' you might want to look into your mobo manual and look what they say. You might also want to go into your BIOS and set all your ram to run at 100MHz, instead of 'by spd', which means that your motherboard will force all your ran to run at 100 MHz, otherwise it might have a little problem with the two different speed modules

Sorry to be honest i dont really deal with 133 and 100 ram now, i use ddr ram. Much much quicker. But i have gto 100mhz in my shitty comp. And the man who i was going to buy the new ram off told me. "If your comp is older than 3-4 years old get the 100mhz ram, you wouldnt really notice the difference anyway, and the 133 may not work properly"

Now normally this guy knows what he is talkin about, and has helped me build a few computers, and fix many. So please before you say i am talkin bullshit read what i say.

There can be conflicts with old 133mhz ram in old computers. And this is what happened with rockster77 . I can garuntee if he got 100mhz ram it would work. But to be honest 128mhz did make a lot of difference in my computer with the 400mhz processor. Remember a computer is only as quick as it slowest component.

Well i wouldnt go that far, but my mate who runs a fairly succesful small computer company will know, so i usually ask him if i dont no. But we kinda learnt together, so normally we ask each other if we r stuck

I dont suppose anybody knows away i can change one of the jumper settings on my motherboard so that my processor can run at full speed. I had to flash the bios anyway due to the fact that it was not built for a 1.4ghz. We download the update and flashed it. But we forgot to change the jumper setting. Now XP wants to be reformatted and reinstalled to accpet the change. One major prob with win XP. The only thing that XP proffesional lets you change is ram, and i think plug and play devices, and USB devices obviosuly. But i dont like the idea that you can't put a new hard drive in, or change jumper settings on the motherboard without it asking to be reformated. You will find out when it comes to it . So now my processor is running at 1.2ghz instead of 1.4ghz. Still pritty fast though.

Anyway i dont no anything about comps, so i will shut up now

In my experience underclocking RAM isnt a problem, I've got 256MB pc133 in a couple of OLD pc's, a P200 and a PII 333 both @ 66mhz fsb (half the speed the RAM is capable of) and they run absolutely fine. In my bro's Duron 750 I've put 2x128MB sticks one pc100 and one of pc133, and that runs absolutely fine @ 100mhz fsb.
I think the problem might be different brands of RAM being slightly incompatible (for example PQI I have found is not compatible with many other types of RAM).

Flyster, what mobo have you got? check maufaturers website for details etc. or try posting in an "overclockers" forum , I use a couple and have found the other users to be very knowledgeable, and very helpful on a couple of problems I have had, heres the ones I use the overclocking store or overclockers UK ya never know you might be able to get ur 1.4Ghz upto 1.6Ghz, standard o/c for a 1.4 T'bird

No i know how to over clock, you can do it with a pencil, but i dont see the poihnt, it messes up my warranty, and will mean the processor could have a shorter life. I have read up on this a bit.

All i need to do is change a jumper setting on the mobo, tells me how to do it in the manual, but when i do it xp says that i have made a change and i need to reinstal windows, and i cant be arsed, so i am going to wait until i need to reformat then do it. Thanx for the help anyway mate
