I have that mentality all the time I guess everyone does, you just want to better your last track. I do try and stick to it though as I am aware that sometimes out of no where you can make good progress, but sometimes you dont so just need to judge whats best. I keep all my older stuff, as you say I've used it here and there which helps alot.

If I dont like something I did I save the project and start over a new one again. Sometimes I am able to finish one of these "old tracks I never finished", but most of the time there are 2:00-3:00 long fragments of some stuff I could never finish. I probably have hundreds of these.
