Stopping Smoking: Here's what worked for me, see if it's right for you.
Small history: smoked cigs from 13, got addicted slowly but surely. Gave up for 9 months and started again; gave up 1 year, got ultra-pissed and started again. Stopped 5 years now, haven't wanted a fag since. Stopped smoking dope about 2 years after stopping fags - just cos I felt like it, I've got nothing against weed.
Patches and Gum ... AVOID. They just put nicotine into your system and that's the little monster that keeps you wanting fags.
Cutting down before cutting out.... DON'T DO IT. As you cut down each fag seems more precious.
Nicotine withdrawal only left me feeling mildly shitty for a couple of days. The physical addiction is not the problem. It's our heads; you have to change from THINKING like a smoker into THINKING like a non-smoker. Once you stop you get just as happy, sad, bored, stressed, horny, frigid, hungry, full-up and satisfied as anyone else -- the difference is that you now get that way without having to put one of your little friends in your mouth.
The thing that helped me most was a book called "Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking" (Penguin). It's a thin book, you could read it in an afternoon.... DON'T!!! There's just over 21 very short chapters, read a chapter-a-day and at the end of 3 weeks you'll be a non-smoker. (You have to THINK about what you read in each chapter all through the day). I went from 20 to 60 a day reading that book cos I thought they'd be the last fags I ever smoked so I wanted to get as many in as I could. When I finished the book I put my last fag out and thought, "I never have to fucking do that again." That book was the best £5.99 I've ever spent in my life. It's not full of medical shit, we know that already. It's just a nice guy who used to smoke 100 a day who is able to lead you out of the maze, and get you from A to B. From smoker to non-smoker.
Sorry for crapping on. I don't preach to smokers cos I'm not one any more. But if a smoker wants to stop I'll recommend that book.
Good luck.
