the only reason flying is still so cheap is because of the hundreds of millions in subsidies the gov is throwing at the airline industry. a state-operated train system would be receiving a similar subsidy (like the bay area's bart system) so comparing to privately operated bus/train companies like greyhound and amtrak is not quite the same.

well as I offhandedly mentioned, airports cause extra time to be added on to travel and airplanes are less convenient than trains (electrical sockets, leg room, luggage restrictions, etc). So if the price is comparable, in the same range as airfare, I might take the train. But would I pay considerably more for a train? Hell no.

to be honest i dont get to the airport super early. i get there like 30mins before the flight leaves. i then get through security pretty quickly and make it fine. not a huge deal. although i do know that depending on the airport depends on if that works or not.
