Higher salaries sure help in getting to the playoffs but the Yanks haven't won a world series since 2000. Detroit made it to the world series last year and Minnesota/Oakland are typically playing in October. Money doesn't buy championships. Yanks dynasty of the last 90's was helped by economics but the core of that team was homegrown players like Jeter, Posada, Rivera, Bernie, Pettitte. Yanks are trying to go that way again as you can see they didn't sign a single big name free agent this past offseason. The Red Sux, if you include the posting cost and salary for Dice K, actually will spend more money than the Yanks this year. Yanks have also trimmed off about 25 million in salary since last year (jaret wright, sheff, and the big bust randy johnson).
They still obviously have a clear advantage being at 175 million salary vs. 50 but most teams are hovering arount the 75-100 mill range and you can definitely compete at that level given strong management. Also, there is a tax that the Yanks paid last year which was substantial. Upwards of 40 million dollars that was dispersed amongst the smaller market teams.
Chelsea in the EPL is a much worse than the Yanks....

That tax doesn't even come CLOSE to the effect of revenue-sharing in the NFL, it doesn't affect Steinbrenner whatsoever, and it doesn't encourage the small-market teams to spend a dime more.
As for buying championships, yes, you CAN still win with 70-100 million, but you can't possibly argue that you have a better chance at it than you do by spending more. Also, aside from the obvious disparity between the top 3-4 teams and the average, the biggest problem is that there is a titanic gap between top and bottom. As I mentioned before, last year there were two teams with payrolls that didn't even equal what the Yankees were spending on Jeter & Alex Rodriguez. That's an embarrassment.
Simply put, baseball needs to take a cue from NFL in their entire economic structure, because it promotes parity, growth, somewhat reasonable salaries, and, as a result, an increase in popularity for the whole of the sport. Steinbrenner has repeatedly stated that he has no problem with revenue sharing, the most crucial part of the reform baseball needs, so long as there's some sort of minimum level that each team must also meet. He simply doesn't want his money going into profits for other owners.
It really shouldn't be that difficult of a deal to broker, but Selig is the most incompetent of all the Commissioners in major sports. The very fact that he's in the position he is is solely the result of the vote of a lack of confidence from all the other owners, as they selected him sheerly because of his weakness and inability to take a stand on any issue. He was the weakest of all the owners at the time, and still is, and, thus, the other owners supported him simply because they knew that, should he ascend to the position, they would be able to control his every action and decision. He's a spineless imbecile with no concept of what's good for the league, much less the sport, and his post at the head of the MLB has seen the owner/player balance tip to an imbalance never matched by any other sport, and one which, while it gives the owners free reign over what they wish to do with their individual teams, leaves them powerless as a whole against a players' association that is on a collision course with an economic apocalypse.
