There's no question that there's very little dynamic room in music today because of the whole loudness race.
Sounding raw makes a track worse in my eyes (and ears). What you say sounds raw to me sounds unmastered, it's just a poor excuse to give it another word that circles around the fact that this producer either doesn't have the ability to mix properly or simply doesn't have the equipment to tell how poorly mixed their work is. Like I said, there are ways of making something sound raw without it being unmastered.
Music can sound good with any varying degrees of complexity, whether its composed of 1 instrument or 10. As the complexity increases, so does the need to be able to mix properly otherwise things start becoming messy. How messy is totally up to how well its mixed and mastered. |
this is the problem with nonlive produced music. a rock band can have a shitty recording and still be an amazing rock band, but if the electronic recording is shitty, its shitty, end of story.
