Rectangular tanks, not too high, give you more surface area of the water exposed to air which gives you oxygen. More oxygen means you can have more fish and besides that it is just better for the fish. You can also get an aerator which gives more oxygen to the fish.

What kind of fish are you interested in? Get yourself a book. I had a very helpful book that was my bible. It was a hand me down from my dad and from 1964, but it had all the information I needed. I think they have a more updated version. Any book by Dr. Burgess or Dr. Axelrod is an excellent book.

I love male Bettas (Siamese fighting fish.) Beautiful fish. And I agree, salt water is VERY hard and expensive to maintain. I had a friend who had a 60 gallon tank in his parent's house with beautiful saltwater fish, he told me it cost them about $200 a month or so to have the water changed or something to that effect. Fresh water would def. be the best way to go.
