To be completely honest I never followed up. There may be a follow up article in the DJ mag archives

Sweet concept.

I have been to many shows in Toronto and abroad that sell the live recorded show, for pickup at the end of the night, for usually $10.

They record direct from the soundboard and then mass duplicate on the spot.

Pearl Jam also did this a while back - you could buy their live recording from their concert that night.

That's friggin' awesome. I've to see that in Toronto with residents and special guests alike.

Hullabaloo recently did a similar deal.. releasing all their recorded sets from each event. I know it's not on the same night as the event, but it's still pretty awesome.

Announcing the Hullabaloo Complete Archival Project

Featuring the online release of EVERY recorded Hullabaloo set!

Yes, you read correctly, we're releasing EVERY live set we have from Hullabaloo! The Hulla tape library is one of the biggest rave tape libraries in existance, and a virtual history of hardcore raving in North America!

Due to bandwidth constraints we will be releasing a new mix once a week, starting with the oldest. You're going to be able to follow the emergence of Hullabaloo and happy hardcore set by set, party to party. Every set is historical in some way, and most of these sets feature the north american debut of virtually every happy hardcore song you can think of. Most of the visiting UK DJs made their north american debut at Hulla as well, so you'll be hearing a lot of first times.

I'll not only be releasing every set that was previously released through the HullaStore, but as well as any sets that never saw a CD/tape release previously. As long as we have it captured somewhere, it will make it online. Most of our library is hardcore related, but we also have our 2nd Arena headliners recorded featuring trance and hardhouse.

This is all part of a larger more complete archival project. In the coming months we will be posting EVERY picture in my archives from Hulla, as well as encoding video clips. The result will be a complete archive of one of the most important rave movements, online forever for future generations to enjoy and learn from. It was a special time for all of us who were there, and now those nights will live on forever.

A link for each mix will be posted in the new Hulla Recordings forum. People can respond to each thread with their comments or track IDs. I'll also write up a little blurb going over a little of the history of each set.

When this is done, hundreds of hours of live recordings will be here. What's exciting about having this library is that all these parties can be relived forever, instead of forgotten once the sun came up. It was a time when giants walked the earth and we can go back whenever we want.

i like downloading a lot more than i like taking risks with pirated burned copies. cool idea, but i think the days of selling music out of the back of a car outside a venue are long dead.

I wish they'd do that, although I'm thankful that some of my favourite sets were recorded: Sander @ System, Lee Burridge @ FW, Adam Beyer @ 99...If only Satoshi's set was recorded too.

Like suppose you missed a really good set for one reason or another (going to see another DJ, couldn't make it at all, etc), and you go to the club next week, pay like $10 and buy the recording of the set from them. No cover art, maybe even no tracklisting, just a simple CD-R recorded straight from the mixer. It's the closest thing I can think of to being in two places at once. Plus, it would be soo fucking wicked to be able to relive some of those epic sets you hear live.

I know all the problems with this, like copyrights, DJs being bitches about their sets being recorded, etc etc, but imo this is what's holding back music - all that legal crap when all I wanna do is just hear a really good set again, or for the first time. This is why I say "wouldn't it be awesome" cause I realize there's about 0 chance of what I'm talking about actually coming to life.

P.S. This is done in other places. One Nation in UK for example has a lot of their nights recorded completely, and sold later as like 6-CD packs. It's a lot of money though. Example: http://www.catapult.co.uk/?category=15&product_type=90

Those One Nation tape sets are the boom shit!

I think a big reason why DJs won't agree to this is that it will really separate those that hone their craft, and those who are just there to get paid. It's one thing to hear a set in the club, and another when you're at home and are actually paying attention to how the set is structured, and how the DJ carries it there. It'll expose too many DJs who can't mix for shit because you'll have concrete examples of him fucking up throughout the set.
