Its not enough, but my sincere prayers and condolensces go to the families and friends of all those who were killed and wounded. Unfortunately some things in life we'll just never understand. It really angers me to no end that when certain individuals have a 'downfall' in life that they take undeserving people down with them.

I don't plan to get a CHL. Having a gun is the temptation to use it. And there are very, very few situations in which I'd actually want to use one.

also, I don't mean anything against having rifles for hunting or target shooting, or a pistol for target shooting. But a CHL has one purpose: giving you the capability to kill people more easily. Nothing else.

I disagree.

I own a M1911 .45 for self-defense; mainly because of the part of town I currently live in. I *hope* I there never comes a situation where I would have to rely on it, but if there was, I would not be defenseless.

I have been in plenty of traffic situations where I am sure a lesser minded person would have had the impulse to shoot another driver. Anyone who drives in Houston probably has to. However, we all have a choice. I am aware of all the legal implications I would get myself into by taking such action with a firearm and perhaps this knowledge lends self-control. My point being, I have never been tempted to illegaly discharge my weapon; but should I NEED it, it's always there.

I don't consider myself defenseless even without a gun or weapon. I also consider myself to be level-headed, and against violence in general if it can be avoided, and having a lot to lose, and well aware of the consequences. Sure I've been lividly pissed off at a variety of people for a variety of reasons, including traffic and idiots almost getting me killed by doing stupid things with their cars, and to date I've never felt an actual desire to actually shoot them.

But, well, shitty things happen. I'd rather not be mugged and all of a sudden the person who only had a knife in my back now has a knife and a gun. Something unforseeable could alter my mental state, which is a possibility for anyone regardless of how confident they are in their own sanity and levelheadedness. Most people who are shot during robberies are shot by their own guns because the robber didn't have one of his own but took theirs. For the forseeable need that I have for deadly force, there is too much that can go wrong for me to justify the trouble and responsibility of owning a handgun.

if I lived somewhere terrible it might be different, I just see more trouble than need.

CHL's require background checks and training. CHL's give law abiding citizens the chance to protect themselves against anyone who threatens our lives.

It's highly unlikely that the guy with a knife or gun at your back has a CHL.

Read the Parable of the Sheep.

Get your CHL.

I really hope the gun control fanatics don't try to use this event to start restricting gun laws again. They did the same after George Hennard plowed his pickup truck into a Luby's Cafeteria and shot 23 people.

Having a weapon to defend yourself is a constitutional right and should be exercised by those responsible enough to respect the right. IMO, if more people had things such as CHL's then it would be a deterent to would be assailants. I only say this as a former law enforcement officer.

I just don't see people with a CHL using their weapon for anything other than defense. Why do then when you can get a stolen gun for $75 and destroy it immediately after you commit your crime.
