Ah, but there's a crucial difference RJ. In the private sector, highly-paid executives are still accountable to a board of directors or to their shareholders, who can fire them at any time. In provincial parliament we're stuck with them for four years, and they get to use more of our money for marketing.

Having said that, I still think they're better off with high salaries, because a low salary for an elected official is just an invitation to be corrupt. If someone's already making $200K per year, there's maybe a slightly better chance that they won't consider pork to be worth their time. Of course, that logic still doesn't hold water for the libs...

I don't know if your reasoning actually holds up in the real world despite sound logic. Take for example public sector workers.. such as teachers and TTC employees. An "experienced" teacher can make shy of 6 digits... a TTC bus driver.. well.. we know already. Despite what i would call the "pay-to-skill" ratio of these jobs.. we're not getting what we want.

Here I will argue that your private sector "superstars" are not only in it for the money. People want a challenge too.. there has to be an entire paradigm shift on the part of the general population regarding those in power and their compensation. We pay MPs and MPPs and whatever ridiculous amounts already... you don't see us attracting any talent. You know who gets paid? Guys like karl rove.. and campaign managers.. guys who get you elected and are not in publicly elected positions.

Diginut: sound reasoning also.. but i would say history disagrees.
