Stupid question time: I could just bring the Serial ATA drive to them, instead of the whole desktop right? I REALLY don't feel like lugging this beast around.

I'm so desperate I'm actually attemtping to install Windows 98 on my dead laptop

easy DA don't panic lol unless you hear noises while the drive is trying to read...sorta like pitterpatterpitterpatpatpatterBINGDONGDING then i'd worry.

on the reals, need to know some info first

you're running an internal sata? what raid?

if it's striped/array'd and its not reading you might be in trouble, if its mirrored then you should be ok.

you should try to mount it on another computer that already has an OS loaded on it, this way it'll come up as a drive letter to which you can explore in. if you can get to that then i suggest you pull the stuff you need off of it and reformat the sata drive.

As I said before, if it's the OS that's not booting from HDD, get BartPE onto a CD, load up XP, dump SATA stuff on an external HDD (I'm sure you know someone who you can borrow one from) and put it on there. You'll save $$$.

If it's not the OS, then the drive to a reputable company, and be prepared to pay serious $$$

Or risk some amateur not knowing what they're doing, making you sign a disclaimer and losing everything for you.

Is it making a noise when you turn it on? And yes, you can just take the SATA drive with you, but get an anti-static bag first...

I am panicking. I CAN'T lose this stuff. I lost stuff before and I just can't go through it again. This is about 50GB worth of data.

The drive is, according to the Western Digital Lifeguard program, a Promise 1+0 Stripe/RAID0 SCSI drive, position SCSI ID 0

take the drive out. put it in a ziplock bag. get as much air out as possible. stick bag with said drive in freezer over night. the next day reinstall drive in computer. boot up computer and pray this works. if works then copy data off to an external drive. send drive in for repair or replacement under warranty (hopefully its still under warranty). this doesnt always help but more often than not it does. good luck!

mount it on another machine with an OS and explore it as a drive letter and you should be good to go. just make sure on the other machine that in the BIOS you are reading an OS off the IDE drive, so put it in the first boot priority. You can dump the SATA towards the end as the machine will pull up the SATA drive as a data disk.

you're ok don't worry...but do as above just mount it to another machine and you'll be able to retrieve everything!

^^and the freezer thing works, i've done it before and know a bunch of techs that do it at work who service our machines.

and if you don't feel confident in all of this try what mario said, take it to the best buy geek squad. They are over priced and they are stupid, but eventually they work out and give you a disk of all your data. You can just bring in your HD too, they will hook it in and check it out.

I don't have another computer. And this laptop I'm trying to resurrect (again) was out before Serial ATA was invented I think...

Isn't that freezing technique usually for a dying hard drive? I'm almost sure this drive isn't dying yet...

dying doesnt imply that there is a hardware failure. it may just be a bad drive and in need of repair/replacement.
