I'm using Norton 2007 and it runs fine. It emebds itself in the deepest darkest registry so it's in a better position to detectr stuff (but it equally makes it difficult to uninstall!).

i use http://www.free-av.com/
AVIRA free edition. top heuristics and detection rate according to independent test group, very light system footprint too. (comparable with AVG, but looking at the detection rate i think AVIRA is slightly higher now)

AVG Free Edition has been really good on my machine, and its not a RAM hog.

Personally I would stay away from Norton. I've worked on too many machines that were compromised by malicious code, and with Norton installed. The fact is that because Norton is the best-selling anti-virus, that the virus writers are writing code to target Norton processes first before wrecking the rest of your machine.

On a side note, not opening suspicious e-mails and RARs is a good way to prevent 99% of the nasty programs that are out there. That $50 Macy's gift card just isn't worth it!
