That sucks balls. Total deal breaker

You can, however, you'll have to deal with however many milliseconds of latency your sound card has. With the External Instruments & FX feature, you can set up any synths or fx units to be used just like VSTi's in the VST Instrument window. Thus, not suffering any latency and no hassle of recording to audio (although you can bounce to audio if you like). Without that feature, you're stuck with doing things "the old way" with a MIDI track and monitoring through an audio track and then recording to audio and then re-aligning the audio file. Blah, who's got time for all that these days!

Well, I don't actually have any synths

I probably won't get anything except maybe a Virus TI in... a year or so. I guess its not really worth paying double for something I'm 99% not gonna use. :P

Thanks guys.

One last thing... I was planning on getting the academic version, but I can't find the license anywhere on the steinberg site! Is the license the same as the retail version? Will I be able to upgrade in the future?

Guys in the shop didn't seem to know either haha.

Thanks

Like i said.. you can upgrade at any moment, and that will cost you a little more than half the price of the full version.

Reaper is fantastic. Based on my experience using Cubase SX3... Reaper totally wins - small, efficient, unbloated. However, now that I've got a new computer, I think I can afford a bit of bloat. :P

pretty much sealed the deal for me. They only work like that with Cubase or Logic, and I'm gonna get one ASAP!

Echo.. you just give the retailer a copy of your school registration. They should have academic versions in their store (exactly the same but with a little sticker on it). If they don't have it go to another store.

I bought sx3 for half the price that way last year. I updated this year to cubase 4 with the grace update so to get back to your question, there's absolutely nothing to worry about for future updates.

What you will be missing is the lag compensation if you want to use your instruments "real-time", that way you can add inserts and fx on your synth, kinda like use it like a plug-in. This is irrelevant if you plan to use the TI as vst though.

Those behringers are fun. I miss my mackie controller sometimes, so I ordered one of those Frontier Alpha tracks. I just need one fader anyways..

I'm not at home now but if the controller is the bEhringer bcr / bcf ones then I believe Reaper can link to the behringer as if it was a mackie controller. The BCF/BCR have a button on them apparently which when activated emulates the mackie.

Reaper only has volume/pan support for the BCF. That's pretty lame, any controller can do that! I want the full shebang - EQ, sends and all!
