From the sound of things, this bar owner doesn't care about you or what you are doing for the venue. I've had to deal with owners like this before at my first residency, and I am to-this-day glad that I left them when I did (I think I described what happened in an earlier post).

A good deal of this could have been prevented with a contract. We really need to have a sticky/tutorial for making a good DJ's contract, so that all of these locals stop getting screwed over by opportunistic owners.

I think I'll get to work on that...I'm no legal expert but its too important for the local DJs (who are the backbone of the scene).

What I would do is not work for the guy anymore.

It should be known that this guy thinks he's creating "a bit of New York in Milwaukee"(), without caring that:

A. No one in Milwaukee wants that. They want cheap drinks/drink specials, that's all.

and

B. He has picked perhaps the single worst location (right next to a college campus full of kids who can't afford to drink at his "New York" bar) for such an endeavor possible.

In all honesty - there's nothing we could do any differently at this place that would make a difference.

The owner doesn't want to put any effort in - my feeling is that at this point, we shouldn't either.

Definitely - and that's the beauty of this, because there are other places here already working with/willing to work with us - so I don't want NateK worrying about this nonsense.

We worked hard, and had some fun nights - but now our time is better spent on other efforts and opportunities.

i empathise with you all...i've had similar ending experiences with each of the 3 nights i've been a part of. it's not a fun game to play! it's a buzzkill. i agree w/rjt, break off all contact (or say f off) and move on.

i don't think it's worth the stress for most people to try to make something from nothing at these places.

i'm at the point where i'm only willing to do guest spots. no responsibility

anyway, good luck! you guys deserve better...

How much are drinks there, how many people were there, what do you think he made off the bar?

If you brought in 10 people who bought drinks, he should kick you down. Or AT LEAST all DJs should get free drinks. I'll play at a bar/venue for free (with free drinks) if I can tell they're trying and they dont have the means to pay me on top of the tab, but otherwise, like others have said, best fucking off and finding a better place to play at.

@ clovis: it was about capacity, and people were drinking. no different than previous occasions.

rob i appreciate your input since you're the one doing most of the legwork with me. and yeah i agree, we should just concentrate on the weekly now. it's tough trying to juggle both, that's for sure. i just... don't want to develop an "i'm too good to play here" attitude, i mean when we started in january without any previous milwaukee gigs, i was ready to spin for free at any moment, and now that we have some leverage at some other venues around town, i don't want to say, "fuck this place, we've got better places to play at." because what if they fall through? no gigs then. i hate to "burn bridges"; i've screwed myself over many a time with non-dj-related incidents because i was too proud to back down.

@ everyone else: thanks for the input fellas.

It's not about being too good to play anywhere - it's about working with the kinds of people you can have even the tiniest bit of respect for, which I am not capable of having for Mike.

I'd still play, anywhere, anytime, for nothing more than a free drink and some semblence of either effort or appreciation.
