Part of the problem is that "computer guys" (including programmers) are rarely assertive. Doctors and lawyers simply don't tolerate when people constantly ask for professional advice during their personal time.

I'm not even in support, or anywhere near support, but I still get the annoying questions. Now whenever I hear the tired old words "Hey, you're good with computers, right?" I just cut them off and respond immediately with "My rate is $100 an hour, minimum 1 hour and payable in advance, whether I can fix it or not."

I don't expect people to pay this - $100 is more of a deterrent then anything else. If they wanna cough it up, so much the better, I'll have my gums scraped if the price is right. And despite coming across as an asshole, it leads to a lot less alienation than the writer of this list experienced.

i hate trying to fix peoples computer problems...my computers at home run perfect, never a problem. how does everyone's get so screwed up?

In the mid-90s I owned and ran a local computer on-site tech-support and custom-build operation.

People continually called for advice over the phone and I found that probably 1 in 10 calls actually resulted in a service call.

However I found that the 9 calls that I offered free advice (over the phone) usually either ended up buying hardware from me or giving my name to someone else who needed on-site pay service.

I looked at the free advice as marketing (however I usually limited it to 5 minutes or so per call/person).
