Yes, if you need some thundering sound go for amp + speaker setup

You can either go for tower speakers or bookself with an active subwoofer.

Definately the computer multimedia speakers will stand nowhere in comparision with amp+speaker setup

There are quiet a lot of budget stereo intergrated amps there in the market. Depnds where you live as all countries have local manufacturers too, who make good quality amps.

Other wise something like Yamaha, Onkyo, Sherwood, pioneer will be good for you

P.S - I just checked that you live in USA. You can order a set of good quality speakers and amp from many online stores. There are 100s of brands available out there. Being in USA you have got many options and at a good price too
And yes aboud the sound card, CREATIVE sucks. Just see the review and features of Terratec Aurean 7.1 Universe, Aureon 7.1 PCI
Also Auzentech x-meredian 7.1

You can use this sound cards in 2.1, 4.1 , 5.1 or 7.1 modes
ALso they will be good for multimedia speakers as well amp + speaker setup

Google Klipsch 2.1 vs Logitech. Klipsch always gets high marks - but more expensive than Logitech.

I do agree with the other posters that amp+speaker is even better in most cases. It all depends on your budget.
