Dual boot sorta solves 50% of the problem - as long as you don't share anything between sessions then I guess one won't be affected by the other. Still, dual boots are a real pain in the ass. If you want to look for a plugin or ask someone a question on MSN, you have to reboot - ick.
These half-assed security (or performance, if you prefer) solutions are a waste of time. Either virtualize all your unsafe apps, or use a separate machine.

I havent reformatted my machine for over a year and a half.. i have no virus protection, simple Windows firewall.. and only use Spydoctor once in a while to clean things up.
And i havent had any performance or virus problems of any kind.

It's precisely because you don't use A/V that you don't have performance problems. They're the single biggest performance killers, bar none, and the performance cost of A/V is much more dramatic than the viruses they protect against.
You do have to know what you're doing - there are a lot of morons who shouldn't be allowed to operate a computer period, much less without virus protection. But power users are better off just running a scan every couple of weeks while they're asleep and turning off that wasteful realtime protection.

Yep A/V drains resources like nothing.
Hence why a different hardware profile is the way to go my friend. Improves performance on my machine by quite alot
Get a good firewall (block everything bar the programs you want - don't use that "learn mode" crap) and use FireFox with ********. Install AVG or some other non-intrusive virus scanner and only run it once a week or whatever.
Realistically though, this is all wasted words. Most of the people on this forum would have themes, indexing, system restore, and all kinds of stupid crap on their computers anyway.
