Common guys, Halo was never about the best game play, and it was not even about hype or marketing. It was about opportunity.
If you have a great game, like CS, but only available for computer, you have already sectioned off your market.
Halo was popular for the same reason Golden Eye got popular (sort of), it was easy, fun and available for a console. I know that more people have PCs than Xboxs, and I know that 007 was popular for more than just being on a console.
My point is, it gave a whole new generation, and market the ability to play a multiplayer FPS with decent graphics, a decent plot, and easy controls.
Now we have a tonne of FPS', and Halo is not special anymore, but it has built its base and is going to continue to do well because they have done a good job of creating an online world for these gamers.
I don't like FPS', but I can appreciate when somebody exploits a market, and M$ has done so, very well.
