What the hell? How does a keyboard make anyone a better composer? That's the most ridiculous claim I've ever read anywhere.

How can you compose without a keyboard, you can't get very far by drawing notes in in a sequencer, or do some people actually work like this?? I know some people who do this I guess, but they do all glitch and DnB type stuff, not trance, which has a strong melody by nature. A keyboard doesn't make you a better composer it just allows you to compose.

Just because you can't get very far by drawing notes doesn't mean nobody can. I consider my tracks to be fairly melodic and I've never needed a keyboard of any kind.

OK congratulations. Your special.

EDIT: Well, I just listened to one of your tracks, A Path Less Travelled, its really quite nice, but there is no melody you know... At least not in the sense I meant. I can see how you can get by without a keyboard, for YOUR style of music, I still think that for most styles of trance a keyboard is pretty neccesary, styles like those of Armin, PvD, Above and Beyond, all the people you commonly associate with trance.
I'm actually suprised there is any argument about this.

Congratulations, you managed to listen to the one track I've made without melody.

Keyboard isn't necessary. Handy and useful - yes, necessary - no.

It was a genuine suggestion. Yes, I was a smart-ass about it, but meh. No reason to get panties in a bunch.

However, the person who pointed out that perhaps he was already a DJ and wanted production help had a point, so, sorry for my misunderstanding if that's true.

I composed for years without a MIDI controller... and now that I have one, I barely use the keys on it.

i draw all my beats and percussion in on the piano roll. i dont have a midi controller. i would only use my jp 8000 for pads everything else gets drawn in.

Yeah, I end up toying with the keyboard for pads and chord progressions but I often end up clicking them into my sequencer once I have a sound I like anyway.
