Wow really? I never knew that. I thought they get paid a regular amount per hour like everybody else.

nah. Same with any job for which tips are common (waiter, caddy, valet, etc.)

You're comparing me to a slaveowner and the bartender as my slave. That really is a poor analogy since I'm not forcing her to do anything or depriving her of any personal freedoms.

If that really was what Al Sharpton said then I disagree with the guy.

well honestly i'm not sure as i've never bartended, but i assume it's like being a waiter or waitress...the majority of their pay is tips...i would assume bartenders are the same...

the only problem i have with that is that their base salary is no different from a waitress, so they should only get 15% and a dollar a drink is way more than that. does popping the top off a bottle of beer constitute a 25-33% tip?

maybe, but do you really wanna ask for a quarter back?

besides, 15% is skimping.

i guess that's my cash policy. if i go up and buy a drink with cash i just drop a buck. if i have a tab...it might be a little different...

i don't ask for a quarter back either and your seen to be a cheapskate if you don't leave a dollar. but why is it accepted to leave 15% for a waitress but not for a bartender? Waitress does more work to earn that tip. think about it, sets the table, asks you if your ready to order, comes back if your not, takes your order, refill water/coffee, brings you your food and drink, checks on you, takes the check, cleans the table. compare that to what a bartender does.

well, a bartender's probably just as busy, if not moreso--they just don't do as much per customer, but, then again, the 15% is coming out of a much smaller amount than a bill for dinner. Also, it's the whole atmosphere of a club or bar, as opposed to a restaurant. It's more carefree, and people treat their money the same way.

I tip like its going out of style. I tip a dollar per drink for every drink. If I buy a round, same rule applies. For restaurants I usually tip 25% unless service is poor. For other services, like helping with luggage, valet, taxi its usually 5 bucks minimum.

I'm pretty independent so when people basically wait on me, I view it as a personal favor, so I don't mind rewarding.
