Oxygen, Rust, Structural Integrity(or degradation) over the years, fuel, an airplane crashing into the building, carbon monoxide, melting beams, cross-wind, etc. Create mathematical equations each of those, unify them into a giant equation, then apply to the collapse of the buildings.

while it is possible to draft such an equation. there does not exist a machine on earth powerfull enough to solve it. for instance the failure of a concret beam (a slab is essentially a beam for analysis sake) concrete is a non homogeneous material and its plane of failure can not be accurately predicted. the failure plane and mode of concrete is described using chaotic equations of several hundred variables.

so to accuratley describe the failure of the entire structure while taking into account every single possible factor would require a complex chaotic equation of multiple billions of variables.

now from a research standpoint, one of my old professors (had him two years ago) performs research in the realm of finite element analysis here at carleton using a super cluster computer... fancy pants array of stupidly fast machines in their own room taht basically crunges numbers and solves very complex equations. he is working on a passive sonar technology that basically uses finite element analysis on marine wave propagation with respect to low frequency hydrophone waves that basically works out to an equation of over a million variables.

even if you could accurately model the wtc disaster. you would never be able to solve it without making some major asumptions, which wouldnegate the purpose of doing it

The question we need to ask is this : Is the string theory, a theory of everything ?

quote:
What is largely beyond question...is that even if one accepts the debatable reasoning of the staunch reductionist, principle is one thing and practice quite another. Almost everyone agrees that finding the Theory of Everything would in no way mean that psychology, biology, geology, chemistry, or even physics had been solved or in some sense subsumed. The universe is such a wonderfully rich and complex place that the discovery of the final theory, in the sense we are describing here, would not spell the end of science.

Quite the contrary: The discovery of the T.O.E.—the ultimate explanation of the universe at its most microscopic level, a theory that does not rely on any deeper explanation—would provide the firmest foundation on which to build our understanding of the world. Its discovery would mark a beginning, not an end. The ultimate theory would provide an unshakable pillar of coherence forever assuring us that the universe is a comprehensible place

So the answer is no...now go back to conspiracy theories. They will give you a better close-form solution.

/thread.

engineer brains are just beyond me.

too bad i didn't inherit that from my dad. he's an engineer geek. it's so cute when he starts talking about stuff in Popular Science Magazine.

:/ i'm not into conspiracy theories. I thought it could have bee applied to the nutjobs to shut up. I went to the book store the other day for a science book, but browsed briefly through Politics and there was Debunking 9/11 Myths: Popular Science putting Loose Change to shit. Then next to that was A Rebuttal to Debunking 9/11 Myths, which in turn, debunks the science of popular mechanics.
Also, Loose Change has been revised to a final cut with a bigger budget and set for release nationwide in theaters near the end of the year.
I saw the BBC special where PopSci and the college weirdos behind loose change were going head-to-head in a debate and the Loose Change guys seemed to be applying their own science to things that could not be explained (because of too many variables). If scientific fact is what they wanted, i figured String Theory would've given them that.

Quick Engineer joke : Arguing with an engineer is a lot like wrestling in the mud with a pig. After a few hours, you realize that he likes it
